Gastrointestinal Studies: Technology and Benefits
Gastrointestinal (GI) imaging pertains to the upper gastorintest tract, from the esophagus to and including the duodenum. Fluoroscopic diagnostic views are taken after the ingestion of barium sulfate solution. Some normal findings include normal size, contour, patency, filling positioning and transmission of barium through the lower esophaqus stomach and duodenum.
GI testing are often requested when a patient experiences unexplained symptoms of abdominal pain, dysphagia, regurgitation, diarrhea, or weight loss. It is used to help diagnose disorders and diseases of, or related to, the upper gastrointestinal tract, including cases of hiatal hernia, diverticuli, ulcers, tumors, obstruction, enteritis , gastroesophageal reflux disease, Crohn’s disease, and pulmonary aspiration. The test is sensitive enough to detect important pathology.
The three types of GI studies offered at Canada Diagnostic Centres include Upper GI studies, Small Bowel Follow-Throughs (SBFT), and Barium Enemas.
Fluoroscopy uses small amounts of X-ray radiation to image the gastrointestinal system.
