2D & 4D Ultrasound: Technology and Benefits

How can Ultrasound help me?

The GE Voluson 730 and E8 imaging equipment used by Canada Diagnostic Centres are among the most medically advanced technology today. The Voluson E8 offers advancements in imaging quality, automation, transducer technology and imaging analysis. This technology offers superior resolution, generating clearer images that can allow for a diagnosis that is more accurate.

Canada Diagnostic Centres offers 2D, 3D and 4D ultrasound imaging. All of these services covered by Alberta Health Care.

2D Ultrasound offers a single ‘snap shot’ like slices of a particular area. A CD-Rom of fetal images are available in 2D. A reasonable fee is charged for this service.

3D Ultrasound technology takes a range of ‘snap shots’ or slices to provide a multidimensional view of the area called a "volume sample." Where 2D could take a single slice of an organ like the kidney, 3D imaging takes a volume sample of the entire kidney. This data can be manipulated to reveal different angles, offering greater flexibility to help diagnosis difficult cases.

4D (Real Time) Ultrasound represents the latest breakthrough in medical imaging technology. Unlike 2D and 3D images, which are stored and reviewed at a later date, 4D technology reconstructs the 3D images in real time, allowing the images to be viewed ‘live’, similar to a video. Popular for obstetrical applications, it may be a good application for seeing any facial or external abnormalities of the fetus. A CD-ROM of fetal images, similar to a video is available for patients upon request. A reasonable fee is charged for this service.
