What is CT?

Computed Tomography (CT) is an enhanced form of X-ray technology that uses a computer to produce 3D images from a series of 2D x-ray images. CT is used to produce detailed images of certain body parts including (but not limited to) soft tissue, blood vessels, lungs, brain, abdomen, pelvis, and bones.

CT is often the preferred method of diagnosing many cancers such as liver, lung, and pancreatic cancers because it can determine a tumor’s location, size, and affected tissue area.

Types of CT Scans

Diagnostic CT Scan

A diagnostic CT pinpoints areas of concern to help detect diseases before symptoms occur so they may be properly treated. Areas include:

  • Head
  • Spine
  • Extremities
  • Chest
  • Abdomen
  • Pelvis

Preventative Health Scan

Screening before symptoms occur is yet another way to lead a healthy life. Preventive Health Scans use CT technology to aid in detecting early signs of heart disease, lung cancer, and colon cancer.

At Canada Diagnostic Centres, we offer the following preventative health scans:

Coronary Artery Scan

A Coronary Artery Scan examines the coronary arteries to measure the amount of calcium present. This is an indicator of plaque in the arteries and can help detect early signs of coronary artery disease.

Lung Scan

A Lung Scan examines abnormalities found in other imaging tests and helps diagnose the cause of an unexplained cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, or fever. This procedure is effective for diagnosing lung cancer at its earliest, most curable stage.

Virtual Colonoscopy

Virtual Colonoscopy is used to diagnose colon and bowel disease including polyps, diverticulosis, and cancer. It also has the following advantages over a regular colonoscopy:

  • It is less invasive, safer, and takes less time
  • No medicine to relax or sedate you is required
  • It can show the inside of a colon that is narrow due to inflammation or an abnormal growth

A Word About Private CT Scans

Diagnostic imaging is often paid by the provincial health care system but sometimes has long wait times. This may create stress or anxiety for some patients. Private CT scans, paid directly by the patient, are available at our CDC Chinook clinic for those who wish more immediate service.

In some cases, these procedures may be covered by your group medical insurance plan. Be sure to check with your plan administrator.
